History of Quartermaster Harbor

The Vashon Heritage Museum just posted a fantastic video on Youtube and we thought we’d share because this covers our neighborhood. Check out the video and find some great spots highlighted such as Rabb’s Lagoon, a pretty easy walk from the cabin!

Rabb's Lagoon

We love visiting Rabb’s Lagoon, which is near the cabin (an approximately 20-minute walk - 1 mi.). In the summertime, the tide going in and out of the lagoon is a fun opportunity for kids to ride the wave in and out through the opening. The water is shallow enough that it stays a bit warmer and makes great swimming.

Bubble Up!

On an island, swimming is a must. It’s a smart thing to know how to do well, and most islanders enjoy jumping in a pool or the ocean for a dip frequently.

Lions and Cheetahs, Oh my!

It was a beautiful day today, so like many gorgeous days, I started the day with a run. The way the fog was drifting over the bay was so gorgeous that I was grateful for the opportunity to stop and stare at the water for a good while. Sometimes when there is fog, it is easy to pretend there is no land on the other side of the harbor.

4th of July Pop-Up Parade

Every year, there is a huge fireworks show over the harbors. With the show cancelled, and everyone in quarantine, the local Chamber of Commerce was not about to let this holiday go unnoticed!

They coordinated a fantastic and fun neighborhood parade where the parade was brought to the residents. No one had to leave their homes, we all simply stepped outside and watched our community drive by, waving and making noise.

Extreme Low Tide at Quartermaster

With everything in town closed (they are slowly and safely reopening now), and no childcare, we have been spending a lot of time at the beach. Last week we had a special day exploring due to "extreme low tide", and when they call it extreme, they aren't kidding! We walked out as far as my kids usually kayak! Life was everywhere, so we walked as cautiously as we could and worked hard to disturb as little as possible.

Waking to Sea Lions

We woke up last week and heard the strangest sound off in the distance... that was a strange dog. As we slowly awoke, the soft sound continued and we realized what it was- sea lions! We jumped out of bed and grabbed the kids to check it out. Things may be closed down in town, but nature is alive and kicking!

COVID-19 and Travelling

Schools are closed. Businesses are closed. It's a quiet time, and we are making the best of the silence here at our beach house. It's a windy day today and white caps are making an appearance causing the ocean to look greener than ever in the mornings and a vivid blue in the afternoon. It's a perfect time to sit inside a cozy home and enjoy the beauty of the beach.

We see the occasional small family strolling the waterfront, and what better place to be when we are distancing ourselves socially?

Gray Whale Visit

I meant to write this back when it happened, but you know... life. We recently had a visitor in Tramp Harbor. This is not the harbor the cabin looks out on, but the one behind the cabin. And the visitor, well... something truly special:

Beachfront Lazy Sunday

We take the European approach at Quartermaster cabin and skip the top sheet for a easy climb-in, climb-out experience and simplified bed making.

The duvet cover is cleaned after each guest, so there doesn't seem to be a point in a top sheet!

We use 100% natural linen, so that bleached fabrics aren't directly on your skin, and our comforter is as fluffy and cozy as they come!

New Beginnings at the Cabin

The cabin came to us with blue floors in the living area, green floors in the bedroom, and orange walls and ceiling in the bedroom. The colors were sweet and felt like a warm autumn day. We wanted something a bit more flexible and fresh- something that felt "beachy" without going the traditional blue and white route.

A warm driftwood gray on the floors and a bright white made a huge difference. Now that a couple of people have stayed in the cabin and dragged things around a bit, the blue peeks through on the floor and I find it charming.
